Union Cabinet Sanctions Major Vadhavan Port In Maharashtra With 20 Million TEU Capacity
There will be nine container terminals.
In the Union Cabinet meeting held on June 19, it was decided that a port would be built at Vadhavan near Dahanu in Maharashtra.
A big decision has been taken for the infrastructure sector in the Union Cabinet meeting led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The government has approved the development of a major port at Vadhavan near Dahanu in Maharashtra. The total worth of the project is Rs 76200 crore. The container capacity at the port will be 20 million TEU. This will also create direct and indirect employment opportunities for around 12 lakh individuals in the area around the port.
This port will be one of the largest port projects in the country and is expected to serve as a gateway port for the upcoming India-Middle East-Europe Corridor (IMEC) and International North-South Transportation Corridor (INSTC). It will be developed as an all-weather Greenfield deep draft major port.

There will be excellent railway and airport connectivity around this port. A very big project in the country has got the green signal. There will be 9 container terminals, each 1000 meters long and four multipurpose berths. According to an Economic Times report, the first phase of this port is aimed to be completed by 2030 and the second by 2040. This port will be among the top ten ports in the world. It is located at a distance of about 150 kilometres from Mumbai.
The government has said that discussions were held with every stakeholder for the construction of this port. The design of the port has been changed and now it will be prepared according to the benefit of the local people. One important thing is that this port will prove to be very important for the India-Middle East Corridor. The Coast Guard will have a separate berth at this port. Apart from this, there will also be a fuel berth.
According to reports, this port is being built jointly by the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) and Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB). JNPA will have a 74 per cent share while MMB will have a 26 per cent share.
