Is ITR Filing Date Extended For 2024?

Despite significant speculation and a surge in ITR filings in the days leading up to the deadline, the Income Tax Department has not released any official statement regarding an extension.

The ITR filing deadline for the financial year 2022-23 (Assessment Year 2023-24) was also not extended beyond July 31, 2024.

‘6.5 Crore ITRs Filed Till July 30’

According to the information available on the official website of the Income Tax Department at around 5 pm on July 31, about 6.5 crore income tax returns have been filed for income earned in 2023-24 till July 30. This marks an increase of over 7.5% compared to the same period last year.

The number of ITRs filed per day exceeded 45 lakhs on July 30 and is expected to rise exponentially on July 31 which is the due date for many taxpayers, it said.

The 6.5 crore milestone, which has been reached on 30 July this year, was achieved on July 31 last year.

For the 2022-23 fiscal, 8.61 crore ITRs were filed.

Can You File ITR After July 31?

You can still file your tax return even if you missed the deadline but with a late fee. This is called filing a belated return.

The last date to file a belated return for the financial year 2023-24 (assessment year 2024-25) is December 31, 2024.
