Although there has been significant speculation and a surge in ITR filings in the days leading up to the deadline, the Income Tax Department has not issued any official statement about an extension.
“Do remember to file your ITR if you haven’t filed yet. The due date to file ITR for AY 2024-25 is 31st July, 2024,” the income tax department said in a post on X.
ITR Filing Last Date Expected To Remain July 31, 2024
Last year, the figure of 4 crore ITR filings was crossed on July 25 but this time this number was crossed on the night of July 22, CBDT Chairman Ravi Agrawal recently said.
Officials expect the total filings to exceed last year’s figure of 6.77 crore by the end of July.

The ITR filing deadline for the financial year 2022-23 (Assessment Year 2023-24) was also not extended.

The current due date for filing ITR for the financial year 2023-24 is July 31, 2024.

You can still file your tax return even if you missed the deadline but with a late fee. This is called filing a belated return.
