After the opposition raised the concerns, reportedly, the Finance Minister shared that this is not how banks generally operate.

Indian National Congress’ Solapur (Maharashtra) Member of Parliament (MO), Praniti Sushilkumar Shinde raised an important matter in the Parliament, a matter of grave concern. According to her, many villages are adopted by national banks, but if there are two or three defaulters from the same village, then the entire village suffers because of it. According to her, banks refuse to offer loans to the rest of the people in the village, including the youth and the farmers. When the matter is brought forward to the District Magistrate, they do not take accountability as they claim it is not under their control. Instead, they say that these things are in RBI’s control. Now, villagers are unable to get a Mudra loan. To this, Finance Minister of India, Nirmala Sitharaman reacted.

After the opposition raised the concerns, reportedly, the Finance Minister shared that this is not how banks generally operate. But if what the opposition has pointed out is happening in a certain area, then she would take it very seriously. As per reports, Nirmala Sitharaman further shared that this is not the way bank offers Mudra Loans and banks are not allowed to withhold loans due to defaulters in the same village. While she could not offer assurance regarding this happening anywhere, she shared that she would get to the bottom of it and quickly come up with a solution.

What do the banking experts have to say regarding this matter?

Former General Secretary, of the National Organisation of Bank Workers (NOBW), Ashwani Rana shared that banks do not practise such methods. If this has truly happened, then he claimed it must have been on an individual level as banks are not allowed to carry out such practices. SBI Meerut’s Branch Manager shared that to date, he has not come across such a case and claimed that loan distribution is decided as on the personal status of an individual.

In case banks refuse to give you a loan without stating any valid reasons and do not resolve the complaint within a month, then a complaint must be lodged with the RBI Ombudsman, where the common man can file a complaint online. All you need to do is visit the portal https://rbi.org.in/Scripts/Complaints.aspx. After entering the relevant information, one can share the details of the complaint. RBI will take strict action free of cost and the complaint will also be resolved soon.
